The sweep

What a chimney sweep includes.

We confirm your fireplace or stove type and access before booking. The cleaning scope depends on the appliance, flue, and what we find; repairs and specialist inspections are separate work.

  • Protecting the work area around your fireplace or stove
  • Brushing accessible flue surfaces to remove soot and loose creosote
  • Removing loosened debris from accessible cleanouts and the fireplace area
  • Checking accessible areas for visible damage or obstructions
  • Explaining any concerns and the next steps before leaving
When to book

Before winter, not after a problem.

Book ahead of the heating season, especially if the chimney has not been cleaned since last winter. A chimney that is used regularly may need attention more often.

Arrange a check if you notice a persistent smoky smell, poor draw, or smoke entering the room. Stop using the fireplace until the cause is assessed. If you suspect a bird nest or blockage, do not light a fire; tell us before booking. Active nests may require a wildlife specialist before cleaning can proceed.

On the day

A straightforward visit, with time to check.

Allow roughly one to two hours for a straightforward single-flue visit; this is a planning guide, not a guaranteed appointment length. Access, heavy deposits, or a blockage can make the job longer. We confirm the expected scope and timing when booking.

Leave the fireplace or stove cold and unused before the visit. Clear the hearth and a route to the appliance, keep pets away from the work area, and let us know about roof access or parking restrictions. We protect the area, clean the accessible flue, and talk through what we found.

Common questions

Before you book.

Is a chimney sweep a WETT inspection?

No. Cleaning and a WETT inspection are different services. If an insurer or property sale requires a WETT report, confirm the required inspection level and the inspector's current credentials before booking. Do not assume a sweep includes certification.

How long does a chimney sweep take?

As a rough guide, allow one to two hours for a straightforward single flue. The appliance, access, deposits, and any blockage affect the time; the appointment scope is confirmed when you book.

How often should I have my chimney swept?

Have a wood-burning system checked at least annually and cleaned as its condition requires. Frequent use, wet wood, and creosote buildup can require more frequent cleaning. Follow your appliance manufacturer's and insurer's requirements.

Do gas fireplaces need the same sweep as wood fireplaces?

No. Wood-burning flues collect soot and creosote. Gas appliances need their own appliance and vent checks by an appropriately qualified gas technician. Tell us your fuel and appliance type so we can discuss the right service.
